Logies 2024: Host’s savage swipe at beloved Home and Away star divides fans
Was Sam Pang’s Ray Meagher Logies joke ‘tacky’ or classic Aussie humour?
Sam Pang didn’t hold back during his Logies 2024 opening monologue, taking down many celebrities in the room. This included a swipe at Home and Away stalwart, Ray Meagher, who has played Alf Stewart since the show began in 1988.
Meagher recently celebrated his 80th birthday, so Pang’s dig took aim at his age.
“Big night for you, nervously waiting to see if you’re included in the in-memoriam package,” he said, with the crowd erupting into laughter.
Meagher himself looked chuffed with the joke, laughing along politely.

“I love Sam Pang BUT yeah, [it was] a bit tacky,” one person said.
“I feel Sam has been very rude to all the popular people, as well as not knowing half of what he’s talking about, but I guess someone has written it for him,” another added.
“A very boring night,” a third chimed in.
“I felt there were a few tacky moments,” another agreed.
“Could have been worse, could have been a Sonia [Kruger] joke,” another said.
A swath of Home and Away fans soon came to Pang’s defence, saying that it was simply good old ‘Australian humour’.
“Just a light-hearted joke, Ray laughed at him,” a fan pointed out.
“Some people need to learn to take a joke. Pang and Ray are good mates,” another said.
“An absolute joke, nothing wrong with it,” a third remarked.
“It was fine, [Ray] knows it’s a joke,” another said.
Sam Pang’s savage Logies 2024 monologue praised
Sam Pang didn’t hold back, taking aim at Channel 7, Olympic breakdancer Rachael ‘Raygun’ Gunn, singer LeAnn Rimes, and more.
On X (formerly known as Twitter), viewers went wild over how hilarious the comedian’s opening monologue was.
“Okay, five mins in and we need to lock in Sam Pang to host every Australian awards night moving forward. KILLING IT,” one person wrote.
“Sam Pang is just a toned down Jimmy Carr or Ricky Gervais but f**k he’s funny. Possibly Australia’s best,” another said.
“Another great monologue from Sam Pang. He really is the master of walking that line between funny and offensive. Tipping the Raygun line to get plenty of traction tomorrow,” a third added.
“The only part of the Logies I’m keen for is Sam Pang’s monologue,” another said.
